Pinecones of the Northwest presents: MONROE SALT WORKS!
Monroe Salt Works combines the ancient process of salt glazing with the beautiful rich surface designs to create distinctive hand made pottery. Each piece is handcrafted - reflecting our commitment to workmanship, quality and design From the mixing of the clay and forming of each shape to final inspection, each pot is handled 18 times. Rims are trimmed on a wheel, handles pulled by hand and designs individually painted. After the pots are painted, they are dried on racks, waiting for firing. It is the salt glaze formed during this process that gives Monroe Salt Works pottery the unique look that has become their trademark.

Salt glazing is a unique process, dating back to the 15th century Germany. They load the dried pots into large walk-in kilns, and slowly begin the firing process. Over the next 20 hours the fire builds until the temperature reaches 2300 degrees Fahrenheit. Handfuls of rock salt are then thrown into the white-hot kiln. When the salt hits the fire, it explodes and vaporizes. The resulting vapor is what actually combines with the clay to form the glaze during firing. Because this process is so dynamic, no two pieces are ever the same. Each piece of pottery shows the mark of firing. Each pot has its own individual character and complements each other beautifully.Monroe Salt Works pottery is durable and chip resisant, Dishwasher safe, oven proof and microwave safe. Such beauty should be considered "Kitchen and Table ART", not just stoneware, and to be passed on from generation to generation!
